Revered for its many health promoting benefits, Reishi mushroom has been used for more than 2,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine. Reishi is a medicinal mushroom that grows on trees or logs and can be harvested and processed through an extraction method that results in a fine power bursting with magic. And by magic, I mean the ability to relieve stress, enhance longevity, boost immunity and lower blood pressure.
Reishi has even been reported to reduce cancer metastasis, and contains anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Dr. Gabriel Cousens states, “It may prove to be the greatest prevention against cancer because it helps us to protect ourselves by our own power.”
My favourite way to enjoy Reishi is blended into a calming elixir as part of a nighttime ritual that promotes relaxation and supports healthy sleep. When I sip on this warming drink, I immediately feel a sense of inner calm and awareness, helping me wind down after a long day.
Reishi Hot Cacao Elixir
Ingredients
- 1 cup nut milk (I love almond and cashew)
- 1 tbsp organic cacao powder (choose cacao over cocoa for the purest, raw form of chocolate)
- 1-2 tsp Reishi powder
- 1-3 tsp maple syrup (adjust per your desired level of sweetness)
- Dash ceylon cinnamon
- Pink of himalayan pink salt
- Optional: enhance the adaptogenic goodness by adding in ashwaganda or astragalas
Method
- Heat milk in a small pan on the stove until nearly boiling
- In a cup, add cacao, Reishi, cinnamon and salt (plus additional adaptogens if using)
- Pour hot milk in cup and stir well (a little battery-powered stick frother works great too)
- Add in maple syrup and stir to combine
Enjoy!
