Can you share a bit about your background, specialization, and what initially drew you to holistic nutrition?
My own health journey is what sparked my passion for holistic nutrition and women’s health. When I was 18, I developed an eating disorder and became obsessed with my body and with food in a very unhealthy way. I ran myself into the ground with over-exercising and under-eating for years, and then I started to see the side effects from my actions begin to make themselves very apparent. This was around the time that wellness was really starting to take off on social media and because of that I started to educate myself more on nutrition and began to shift my obsession around food to a desire to learn how different nutrients and foods affect the body and our well-being, this ultimately led me down the path of holistic nutrition and pursuing becoming a Certified Holistic Nutritionist.
I specialize in Women’s Reproductive Health, Hormones, and Fertility, and I have taken 5 different specializations to be able to work with women at all stages of life. My own journey with my hormones is what really sparked my passion for helping women balance their hormones. I came off of the hormonal birth control pill when I was 21 after being on it consistently for 7 years, from the age of 15. I lost my period for 2 years, because I was very much still undereating and over exercising, my stress response was through the roof, I was struggling with PTSD from my childhood that I was refusing to allow myself to feel, and because of all of these things I was so disconnected from my body, my hormones were all over the place, I felt terrible all the time, and no matter what I did things were not shifting.
I knew something was off, so I began looking for answers, and after being dismissed by countless doctors, I started to do my own research. I discovered that hormones impact every single function in our bodies and that our menstrual cycle is like a monthly insight into what’s going on, I realized that striving for hormone balance was the key to feeling good and I could actually heal myself with nutrition, supplementation, herbs, and lifestyle practices.
What unique approach or philosophy do you bring to your work that sets your practice apart?
I think my practice is unique because I view nutrition and healing from the lens of what we can add into our lives, not what we can take away. I don’t believe in restrictive diets or cutting things out completely, I think that true health and wellness should be about balance and should feel sustainable, otherwise how are we expected to live that way for the entirety of our lives. I don’t believe in cutting out entire food groups or demonizing anything when it comes to food, I follow a whole foods approach with all my clients but I always assure them that there is room to have balance even when we are trying to heal.
I also think something that makes my practice different is I have truly been in my clients shoes, I have healed my mind and my body, balanced my hormones, regained my menstrual cycle after losing it for years, healed my gut, and changed my life through nourishing whole foods, vitamin & mineral supplementation, and stress reduction and I teach my clients to do the same.
How do you stay inspired and continue to expand your knowledge in the ever-evolving field of holistic nutrition?
I love learning, I’m always listening to wellness/nutrition podcasts and I’m always looking for new courses and ways for me to learn more. I think it’s so important to constantly be learning and expanding my knowledge as new research and data comes out and to be constantly evolving so I can better serve my clients and my community on social media.
What’s one habit or daily ritual you’ve integrated into your own life since becoming a holistic nutrition professional?
Oh my gosh, so many things, I don’t know how I could possibly pick just one. A few things that are constant rituals in my daily life are lemon water with salt first thing in the morning, this helps with digestion, electrolyte balance, it supports the liver, it’s just a really easy hack that makes me feel so good. Not drinking coffee on an empty stomach has done wonders for my cortisol levels and in turn my hormones as well, eating more protein everyday like 30g per meal and primarily from high quality animal sources over plant sources has really changed my health as a whole, and low impact movement over high intensity has really allowed me to regulate my nervous system, lower inflammation, and transform my body physically.
If you could share one piece of advice to your fellow holistic nutrition students and graduates of the program, what would it be?
That educating people on how to nourish themselves, better support their health, and be well, in whatever way that looks like for you, will be without a doubt the most rewarding career. Also, don’t be afraid to “fail” or not know what you’re doing if you’re building a business for the first time, just keep moving forward and learning and you’ll figure it out.
Looking ahead, what goals or projects do you have for the future of your wellness practice?
I’m launching a podcast in December which I’m very excited about. I will also be working in a clinical setting at an esthetician clinic once a week taking clients so that will be the first time I’ve taken clients in person in my 8 years of being a Nutritionist, so that’s very exciting. I am also working on formulating a product and just want to continue to grow my social media community as I think that is the best way to reach and educate a high volume of women. I’m always growing and expanding and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
