This month, we’re excited to spotlight NutraPhoria Alumni, Licensed Holistic Nutrition Practitioner & Health Coach Randee Fagen, whose journey teaches us the power of following our passions. After co-founding two successful software start-ups, she turned her lifelong curiosity for health and nutrition into a thriving holistic practice. What began with personal experimentation and helping friends has blossomed into a career rooted in bio-individuality, whole-food nutrition, and lifestyle transformation. Her story is a beautiful reminder that the achievement of true wellness can be woven from many threads – from nutrition and movement to mindset, rest, and of course, purpose.
Can you share a bit about your background, specialization, and what first inspired you to pursue holistic nutrition?
My career began in business and marketing. I co-founded two software start-ups in my 20s and 30s. But behind the scenes, I had a lifelong fascination with health, fitness, and nutrition. I was the person who devoured every book, study, and article I could find… and then tested the ideas on myself.
I became my own N=1 experiment, exploring everything from keto to vegan, carnivore to paleo, tracking my blood sugar, ketones, and more. Working as a personal trainer deepened my belief in movement as medicine for both body and mind.
Friends and family constantly came to me for advice, and I realized how much I loved helping them. Once my kids were older, I decided to turn that passion into a profession. I earned two health coaching certifications from Precision Nutrition, completed the Advanced Holistic Nutritionist Diploma Program with Nutraphoria, and am now studying at the School of Applied Functional Medicine.
Today, I run my own practice, helping people transform their health through a holistic, highly personalized approach and I truly can’t imagine doing anything else.
How has your perspective on health and wellness changed or evolved since studying Holistic Nutrition?
Before studying holistic nutrition, I thought health was mostly about diet and exercise. Now I see it as an interconnected web… linking nutrition, mindset, sleep, environment, stress, relationships, and even purpose.
I’ve learned that symptoms are signals, not the problem itself. My focus has shifted from “managing” health issues to understanding and addressing their root causes so the body can truly heal.
What’s your unique approach to holistic nutrition, and how does it shape the way you support your clients?
My approach is rooted in bio-individuality. No two people have the same health history, lifestyle, genetics, or goals. I look beyond the surface to understand what’s truly driving their health challenges. By combining whole-food nutrition, lifestyle habits, and practical strategies, I create a plan that evolves with each person and supports lasting change. I work with every individual as a partner, developing strategies that fit seamlessly into their lifestyle at a pace that’s stress-free and sustainable.
Since becoming a holistic nutrition professional, what’s one habit or daily ritual you’ve implemented that has had the biggest impact on your well-being?
The most impactful change has been learning how to set my body up for optimal digestion and steady energy. That means starting meals in a relaxed state, eating without distractions, and actually chewing my food, but also being intentional about meal composition so my blood sugar stays balanced and my body absorbs the nutrients I’m giving it.
I still enjoy treats and the occasional indulgence, but now my choices are guided by knowledge rather than sheer willpower. And I’ve learned that what happens outside of the kitchen matters just as much, so I make quality sleep and stress management non-negotiable parts of my daily routine!

Can you share a standout success story or transformation from a client that deeply impacted you?
One of the most memorable transformations I’ve seen was with a woman navigating both type 2 diabetes and menopause. She was frustrated by stubborn weight, blood sugar swings, and the fatigue that often comes with both. We focused on balancing her blood sugar through whole-food nutrition, strategic meal timing, exercise, better sleep, and steady lifestyle shifts she could maintain. Over time, she lost weight, stabilized her energy, and brought her blood sugar into a healthy range, to the point where her doctor could significantly reduce her medication.
What inspired me most wasn’t just the lab results or the number on the scale. It was watching her regain her confidence, feel at home in her body again, and realize that real change is possible at any stage of life.
How do you stay inspired and continue growing in the ever-evolving world of holistic wellness?
I’ve always been a lifelong learner, curiosity is just part of who I am. In this field, that means constantly diving into new research, courses, and case studies to deepen my understanding. I’m fascinated by both the lifestyle factors and the biochemical mechanisms that drive health or disease.
Every person I work with is like a unique puzzle. Watching someone connect the dots about their own body and experience lasting change is incredibly inspiring. It pushes me to stay at the cutting edge so I can bring them the best possible tools and strategies.
What excites me most is that in nutrition and health sciences, the learning never ends. The field evolves so quickly that there’s always something new to discover, and for me, that’s part of the magic.
If you could give one piece of advice to current students or recent graduates, what would it be?
Don’t wait until you feel like you “know it all” before you start helping people, because that moment never really comes. Imposter syndrome is real (I still feel it often!), but you already have enough knowledge to make a difference right now.
You don’t need the perfect website, a ton of testimonials, or a polished social media presence to begin. Start where you are, with what you know, and take one step forward at a time. Confidence comes from experience, and the more you work with people, the more lives you’ll positively impact.

What’s next for you? Any exciting projects, goals, or new directions for your wellness practice?
I’m on track to become a certified functional medicine practitioner by early 2026, which I’m incredibly excited about. My goal is to keep growing my business, continue learning, and enjoy what each new day brings. Long-term, I’d love to build a strong referral network with local physicians and complementary practitioners. This is something I plan to pursue more actively once I’m certified and have more time to dedicate to collaboration.
