Ways to get motivated

January 21, 2017

Ah the new year, with it comes promises of health, good habits and fresh outlooks but how does one calendar day hold so much weight? The day of the year truthfully has no magic power but I can understand the power and appeal of a clean slate. But when the day passes and old temptations creep back how can one make sure that our good intentions stick?

This has been a struggle for me for most of my adult life. I loved having great ideas and starting projects but I rarely followed through. Recently though something has changed and i’m excited to share my thinking.

Most days I wake up with some form of list or personal goals for the day and I keep them private. I do my best to complete them and when the day is over my ultimate goal is to not go to bed rationalising why certain items did not get completed.

Some examples of daily personal goals are:

  • make the best food choices you can
  • meditate
  • exercise
  • clean your space
  • waste less
  • read
  • connect with someone

My list has been the same for years and most days I failed to do most of them but I got tired of letting myself down. These are things to better myself and when i’m at my best I can help others.

So now I want to make myself proud and go to bed without regret or stress because the truth is, life is busy but it can filled with so many more important things.

I eat what will make my body strong, not what i’m craving.

I put down my cell phone and breath for 10 minutes.

I take a walk on my lunch break.

I put things back as soon as i’m done to keep things clean.

I buy what I need, not what I want

I turn the T.V off and read in bed instead

I talk, laugh, and cry with people.

All of these goals are easily completed if there is no excuse getting in the way. I was unhappy so I made a change. I remind myself of this every time I want to revert to old ways and nothing is worth sacrificing the happiness and health I have found.
