10 Benefits of Lemons

August 17, 2017

Every morning, I wake up really early and the first thing I do is drink a cup of warm water with a squeeze of lemon in it. This is such a great way to get your system moving and ready for the day! One ounce of lemon juice has 23 percent of your daily vitamin C and only 7 calories.

10 Benefits of Incorporating Lemons Into Your Daily Life

Anti-aging

The high amount of vitamin C in lemons help prevent free radicals from forming, which allows your skin to look it’s best. Vitamin C also keeps the body producing collagen which smooths out fine lines

Supports weight loss

Lemons contain pectin, a fiber that will help you feel full for longer

Helps with digestion

Lemons help the liver produce bile, which helps move food through your digestive tract. It can also calm an upset stomach

Increases immune system

Foods high in vitamin C boost the immune system by increasing white blood cell production which helps fight the cold and flu (especially needed in the winter months).

Helps with kidney stones

The citric acid in lemons help to dissolve kidney stones and even gall stones

Helps fight cancer

High in antioxidants and contains a compound called limonoid that helps fight cancer

Increases iron absorption

Combining foods that are iron-rich with foods high in vitamin C (lemons!) will increase the iron absorption in your body

Strengthens blood vessels

The bioflavanoids in lemons strenghten the blood vessels which help control blood pressure

Alkalizing for the body

Lemons are acidic but are alkaline forming when ingested and therefore will help maintain the body’s pH level. A proper pH balance is important to prevent tissue damage and protect against viruses

Relaxing

The scent of a lemon has been found to improve moods.

Lemons don’t ripe after they’re picked, so they should be picked at their peak. Squeeze some lemons over cut fruit before adding to lunches, to add flavour and prevent them from going brown. Lemons can be squeezed in warm or cold water or can be used to add some zing to sparkling water. Drinking warm lemon water before breakfast helps flush out toxins and gets your metabolism working right away! They can be paired with both savoury (fish or poultry) dishes and sweet dishes (lemon bars anyone?). Add a lemon to your day and see how it can benefit you!
