Beautifully Healthy: Inside and Out

October 3, 2017

We all have our morning routines. Get out of bed, use the washroom, hop into the shower where we wash our hair and bodies with different amazing smelling products. After Finishing in the shower we brush our teeth, put on some antiperspirant, and for some of us, we put on some makeup.

But have we ever really put much thought about the chemicals we use on our skin on a daily basis? My philosophy is if you would’t eat it then why would you put in on your skin for your body to absorb? We need to start focusing on what we are putting into our bodies as well as on our bodies.

Beautifully Healthy: Inside and Out

The chemicals found in a lot of everyday products can not just harm the environment but can cause harmful things to happen to our bodies such as alzheimer’s, weakening our immune systems, causing respiratory problems, and sometimes can even be cancerous. So what can we do to make sure we stay away from these chemicals?

First thing I would suggest is to go to your local hardware store and purchase a chlorine filter to install on all your faucets. Following the instructions, I can speak from experience, they’re actually quite easy to install. Chlorine can be quite cancerous, cause dry and irritated skin, and can also cause respiratory problems just to name a few side effects.

I would say coconut oil would be the best cleanser. The same recipe can be used to replace your body wash, shampoo, and conditioner! The recipe I use, you really don’t require any moisturizer, since the coconut oil moisturizes as you wash.

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup castile soap (this is just made with a mixture of vegetable oils)
  • 1/4 honey
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 8-10 drops of your favourite essential oil

Toothpastes you find at the store more often then not contain formaldehyde which is very cancerous so it is best to make your own. When you brush your teeth all you really need is just plain coconut oil! Or you can get fancy and smother your toothbrush with coconut oil, dust a little bit of activated charcoal to give some whitening power, place a drop or two of peppermint essential oil for that minty effect. Brush your teeth for about 2 to 3 minutes, and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

Antiperspirant contains aluminum, which has been linked to causing alzheimer’s. When cooking with aluminum it can be leached into your food, so why would we want to use such a product on our bodies to be absorbed? For the best results use a salt stone in the shower, and after your dried off instead of using antiperspirant make your own deodorant. Thoroughly mix the following recipe and pour it in either an old deodorant container or a glass container. If using a glass container you can simply apply it with your fingers.

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 2 Tbsp melted coconut oil
  • 10-12 drops of your favourite essential oil

Just always remember, if you are not willing to eat it don’t put it on your body. The absorbing effects of your daily routine can be just as essential as what you are putting into your body. It is your temple, treat it as such.
