Flu Busting & Gut Friendly Gummies

May 6, 2018

These gummies made from grass-fed gelatin are gut healing, anti-inflammatory, and immune boosting.  There are so many variations of this kid snack, but this citrus flu-busting version is my favourite. Ginger is great for fighting colds and flu, and so is turmeric which also adds a rich colour, making them appealing to kids. Adding food grade essential oils also improves the flavour and add the health benefits of these oils. Using coconut water kefir combines the probiotics and enzymes of water kefir with the electrolytes and vitamins of coconut water. If you can’t find coconut water kefir, add a good probiotic powder. Coconut water and lime/lemon, in my opinion, are a winning combination!

Flu Busting & Gut Friendly Gummies

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup lemon/ lime /orange juice or coconut Kefir
  • 3 tbsp gelatin
  • 5 drops food grade lemon/orange essential oil.
  • 2 tbsp honey

Instructions

  • Heat juice or kefir and honey until medium heat (NOT BOILING as boiling will kill off the good bacteria if using Kefir)
  • Mix in gelatin until dissolved (I use Great Lakes Gelatin Company)
  • Put into moulds and freeze for 15 mins

If your kids aren’t regularly drinking bone broth then start slow and only give them a few of these at a time as their gut adjusts or they might have a little loose stool since gelatin has a soothing effect on the digestive system. The advantage to these is that they use gelatin powder as a base so they sooth the gut and give some of the same benefits as bone broth.

Homemade Chewable Vitamins Recipe

Homemade chewable gummy vitamins are a great way to give kids some extra protein and make their vitamins delicious and easy to take!

  • 4 tsp gelatin powder
  • 1/2 cup orange/ lemon cup juice — not pineapple!
  • 2 -3  drops food grade lemon/orange essential oil
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • fresh turmeric (1/2 tablespoon) and grated ginger (1 tablespoon)
  • added vitamin c or probiotics (optional)
  • chia seeds

Instructions

  • Combine the juice, gelatin, and honey if using in a small saucepan and whisk to incorporate.
  • Heat slightly over low heat until gelatin is completely dissolved. It will be thick and somewhat syrup-like.
  • Remove from heat and whisk in vitamins and probiotics if using.
  • Very quickly pour into moulds or a small glass dish lightly oiled with coconut oil and put in the freezer for 10 minutes to harden.
