Add a Practice Built on Your Clinical Training

Nurses and allied health professionals who add holistic nutrition to their work often describe the same before and after.

Where Many Nurses Start

  • ✕A few minutes of teaching before the patient goes home
  • ✕Twelve-hour shifts, nights and a schedule set by the unit
  • ✕Questions about food, sleep and stress with no time to answer them
  • ✕The same patients back with the same complaints
→

Where This Leads

  • ✓Hour-long consultations and follow-ups across months
  • ✓Support that starts while people still feel mostly well
  • ✓Recognized designations: RHNC, RHC and the path to RHNP
  • ✓A practice on hours you choose, beside your nursing role

The Patient Who Keeps Coming Back

Many nurses who come to us describe the same moment in the middle of a busy shift. A patient you know by name is back for the fourth time this year. While you check vitals and settle them in, you catch yourself wondering what they ate this morning, how they have been sleeping and what changed in their life two years ago when all of this started. The chart has no line for any of it, and the shift keeps moving.

You get them stable and teach what you can in the few minutes you have, and they go home to the same days that brought them in. Afterwards a thought stays with you: somebody should be helping people long before they ever need a hospital bed.

The nurses who study with us wanted to be that person, with training and a credential behind them. Many first came to holistic nutrition through their own health, after years of nights left them running on coffee and willpower and food and sleep turned out to be part of the answer. They also wanted work they could shape around their own lives.

Let’s Say It’s a Wednesday a Year From Now

You worked your three twelves earlier in the week, and today is yours. At ten you open your laptop for a follow-up with a client you have seen for four months. When she first booked, she was exhausted by mid-afternoon and waking at three every night. Together you have been working through her breakfasts, her caffeine and the stress she brings home from work. Today she tells you she slept through the night four times this week.

At one you meet a new client on video who lives two provinces away and found you through a talk you gave at her community centre. You have a full hour with her, time to ask about her history, her sleep, her food and what changed before her symptoms began. By three you are finished, with the rest of the day for your own family.

You decided how many shifts stay on your schedule and how many hours go to your own practice.

02

Complete Tier 1

Most students finish in 6 to 12 months online, and you keep nursing the whole way through. Register with HCA (Health Coach Alliance) as an RHNC and RHC, with access to insurance that covers nutrition consulting.

03

Start Seeing Clients

Use the Nutrition Business Blueprint to design, price and offer your services, starting with a few clients on your days off. Continue to Tier 2 for the RHNP whenever you are ready.

What You Will Learn

The Institute offers two tiers that build on each other, so you can grow your education and credentials as far as you like. Tier 1, the Holistic Nutrition and Health Coach Diploma, is complete on its own and takes 6 to 12 months of online study at your own pace, so you can fit it around your shifts. It leads to registration as an RHNC and RHC, so you can offer holistic nutrition as a service separate from your nursing role, on hours you choose. Tier 2 is optional if you want further training.

Start here · Tier 1 · 6 to 12 months

Holistic Nutrition and Health Coach

Nurses who study with us already have training in pathophysiology, pharmacology and assessment. Tier 1 adds how food, digestion, blood sugar, hormones, sleep and stress affect how a person feels each day, and you practise on client cases from your first course.

  • Fundamentals of Integrative Nutrition

Learn to assess what someone eats, see what the diet is missing and build meals around food quality, including how much protein a person needs. A full lesson covers Ayurvedic nutrition, a traditional approach to everyday eating.

  • Principles of Holistic Health and Nutritional Medicine

Adapt nutrition for every stage of the life cycle and uncover hidden contributors such as food sensitivities, environmental exposures and gut disruption. You also learn to ask what changed in a person’s life before the symptoms began. There is often little time for that question during a busy shift.

  • Integrative Nutritional Science

Study how blood sugar, digestion, hormones, detoxification and cellular energy respond to food and daily habits, building on the physiology you learned in nursing. You learn to explain the reason behind every recommendation, so a client understands why each change is on her plan.

  • Health and Nutrition Coaching

Learn to support stress, emotional eating, the nervous system, and sleep and circadian rhythm for people who work shifts, and to lead the intake, the coaching conversation and the follow-up. Coaching sessions give you time with one client, and you help her stay with her plan between sessions over weeks and months.

✔ Before you graduate, you complete five client case studies, including a recorded coaching session, so you have already done client work when you start your practice.

Optional next step · Tier 2 · A further 6 to 12 months

Holistic Nutritionist

Tier 2, the Holistic Nutritionist Diploma, is optional for graduates who want to take on more complex cases. Nurses who continue already know much of the anatomy, physiology and pathology, so more of their study time goes to how each body system responds to food, stress and lifestyle.

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology

Work through every body system and how a change in one affects the others, so you can follow how a client’s digestion, hormones and nervous system influence each other.

  • Pathology and Advanced Symptomatology

Study how conditions develop, read a full set of symptoms together and recognize red flags. You also learn exactly when to refer, so your holistic nutrition work stays within its scope and supports a client’s medical care.

  • Mind Body Nutrition

Explore the glymphatic system, neurodivergence, brain aging and dementia, mental health and eating for brain health. You also study how thoughts and long-term stress shape disease, and practices that help clients change how they live.

✔ You finish with comprehensive case reports and are ready to work with clients who have complex health histories, in coordination with their medical care.

What Nurses Ask Before They Call Us

“My nursing licence comes first.”

Many health professionals run a holistic nutrition practice as a separate service. Your nursing college or regulator sets the rules for how the two connect, such as how you describe each service and how you keep records, so check with them. Admissions can talk through the questions nurses raise most often.

“I already know anatomy and physiology.”

The familiar material moves quickly, and your nursing education gives you a head start in Tier 2. Most of your time goes to what nursing school had little room for: functional nutrition, food as a therapeutic tool, nutrigenomics, psychoneuroimmunology, mind body nutrition and coaching that helps people change habits. You build on everything you know as a clinician, without the cost and years of another degree.

“I need training at a clinical level.”

The curriculum covers biochemistry, pathophysiology, mitochondrial science and parasitology, applied to client cases, and you complete five client case studies, including a recorded coaching session, before you finish Tier 1. The Institute is recognized by three independent bodies: HCA, GAIN (Global Association for Integrative Nutrition) and NANP (National Association of Nutrition Professionals).

“I have no energy left after twelve-hour shifts.”

The program is online and self-paced, so you study after a set of nights or on your days off, and it waits for you through a heavy stretch. Courses open in sequence, so you always know what comes next, and the practitioners who teach the program answer your questions directly.

“I can’t give up my pension or benefits.”

Your position, pension, benefits and income stay in place while you train. After Tier 1 you can register as an RHNC and RHC and see a few clients on your days off. Some nurses keep both roles for years, and others let the practice grow into their main work, on a timeline they choose.

Designed for Practice

Anyone with a phone can look up facts in seconds. What clients look for in a practitioner is judgement: someone who listens to their story, sees how the pieces fit together and knows what to do first. Each course builds that judgement one client case at a time.

ROOTS

The ROOTS Method™

ROOTS is the clinical reasoning method taught in every course. It gives you a clear way to work through a client’s story, decide where to begin and know what comes next. You practise it case by case from your first course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I practise holistic nutrition and keep my nursing licence?
Yes, many health professionals run a holistic nutrition practice as a separate service. Your nursing regulator sets the rules for how the two connect, such as how you describe your services and whether you offer both in the same setting, so check with your college. Admissions can talk through the questions nurses most often raise.
Will the science repeat what I learned in nursing school?
The anatomy, physiology and pathology will feel familiar, so those parts move faster. Your energy goes to functional nutrition, food as a therapeutic tool and root-cause reasoning, applied to client cases from your first course.
Can I keep my nursing job while I study?
Yes. The program is fully online and self-paced, so you keep your position, benefits and income and study around your shifts and your family.
How soon can I start seeing clients?
After Tier 1, which takes most students 6 to 12 months, graduates can register with HCA as an RHNC and RHC and begin working with nutrition clients, with access to insurance that covers nutrition consulting.
Can I work with clients who have diagnosed conditions?
Yes, within scope. Holistic practitioners support clients with conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure through education, nutrition and lifestyle support, in coordination with their medical care. You never diagnose or treat, and the program teaches exactly where that line sits.
What does it cost, and can I pay monthly?
Tier 1 is $2,546 and the full two-tier program is $3,650 in total. Tier 1 payment plans run up to 6 months and full-program plans up to 10 months, Affirm and Klarna at checkout offer some plans up to 24 months, and tuition is GST-exempt. Ask admissions about the $400 bursary.
Is NutraPhoria Integrative Health Institute accredited?
NutraPhoria Integrative Health Institute is an independently owned Canadian online school that has been teaching for over 13 years. It is recognized by HCA (Health Coach Alliance), GAIN (Global Association for Integrative Nutrition) and NANP (National Association of Nutrition Professionals). Tier 1 graduates can register as a Registered Holistic Nutrition Counsellor (RHNC) and Registered Health Coach (RHC); Tier 2 graduates qualify for the Registered Holistic Nutrition Practitioner (RHNP) and can apply for Board Certification in Holistic Nutrition (BCHN).
How is a holistic nutritionist different from a dietitian or a nurse?
Dietitian is a protected title for regulated professionals trained through university dietetics programs. Holistic nutrition is its own field, separate from nursing and dietetics, focused on root causes, food quality, lifestyle and coaching, with registration through professional associations. Holistic practitioners work within their scope to complement a client’s medical care, which is why nurses can build it as a separate practice under their holistic nutrition designations.

Email admissions@nutraphoria.com with any other question and the team will get back to you.

Your Clinical Training Brought You This Far

Nurses who come to us tend to be the ones who asked one more question at the bedside, read the research on their days off and believed people could feel far better than stable. Here they study with classmates from nursing, allied health and many other fields, taught by practitioners who still see clients. Our students are Health Detectives, and the first case many of them solve is what they want their own working life to look like.
