Winter Soul Food

November 22, 2016

Today is our first snow fall of the year and it made me think of food that warms the body and warms the soul. There are many staple winter dishes but I will talk about my favourite in this blog…..chili!

There are many variations of chili. It’s a very diverse dish which can be customized to your liking. You can add different kinds of vegetables and have it on rice or noodles. You can use different animal proteins or make it a vegetarian dish. Chili can be mild or you can use stronger spices to warm you up from within. The spicy and hearty aroma of chili will lure the family to the kitchen.

Chili is a dish that is really easy to make in bulk so it’s perfect for a family gathering or a party. It’s a perfect dish for the holidays! With all the yummy flavours and colours, kids love it too! It’s easy on the pallet and is also quite nourishing.  The vegetables are plentiful and nutrient rich. Chili is a great source of protein, even with a vegetarian version. You can fill your chili with all kinds of beans.

I would love to share with you my quick, easy and wholesome chili recipe.

I try to use as much organic produce as possible.

Chili Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 500g of extra lean ground turkey
  • 1 half green and 1 half red pepper – diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped
  • Mushrooms
  • 2 tomatoes diced
  • 2 table spoons of tomato paste
  • Chili Seasoning (chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, oregano, sea salt, and black pepper)
  • 1 can of red kidney beans
  • Optional – shredded cheese

Directions:

  • First I add olive oil to the pan and let the pan heat up at medium heat.
  • I then add in the garlic, onions, peppers and mushrooms stirring constantly.
  • After about a minute, I add in the extra lean ground turkey and cook it through stirring with the vegetables.
  • Once the meat is cooked, I add in the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, chili seasoning and the kidney beans and let it simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
  • Once plated, you can add the optional shredded cheese for flavour and texture.

You can also add some nice garlic bread strips around the bowl for presentation and allure.

You will feel your soul fill with warmth as you enjoy this chilli dish. I will share with you my secret ingredient which will surely add that extra ‘oomph’ to your chili. Here it is…..make it with love! There is a big difference in taste when food is made with the heart.

Make it for your family tonight and you will see! 🙂
