7 Tips: How To Combat Seasonal Depression

I myself have experienced Seasonal Depression. I enjoy the warmer months when the sun is shinning and the birds are chirping. I love the outdoors and during the warmer months I am ALWAYS on the go.  Whether it be hiking, walking, going to the beach, etc.  When the winter rolls around I am not myself.

For this reason I am not fond of winter and I believe it is because I am sensitive to light. I, like may others, need sunlight to be happy!!

The onset of Seasonal Affective Depression (SAD) usually begins in late fall and can last until spring.  During the winter months most people with SAD usually begin to feel sad, moody, fatigued, low energy, increased appetite, weight gain, headaches, trouble with sleep, etc. The cause of SAD is still unknown.  Some factors include light sensitivity; a decrease in sun light may disrupt a persons internal clock and may also decrease serotonin levels which lead to the feeling of depression. Whatever the causes may be there are healthy ways to treat SAD.

7 Tips: How To Combat Seasonal Depression

Get outside more

Get that vitamin D in whenever you can!! A walk in the park, or around your neighborhood will feel good – even when it’s cold. Fresh air and sunlight does wonders!

Exercise

Walking, running, yoga and swimming are great ways to feel better.

Eat A Healthy Diet 

Fresh organic produce! More fruits and vegetables. Stay away from unhealthy processed food and practice portion control – no overeating.

Good Sleep Pattern

Having a healthy sleep pattern is important.

Take Up A New Hobby 

Sewing, painting, pottery, writing.

Practice Self – Care 

Bubble baths, dinner with friends, keeping a journal, reading a good book, facials, buying fresh flowers. Whatever makes you happy – do more of it!

SAD Lamp

Even as little as one hour a day may help!

Practicing the above has helped me manage SAD.

Winter can be long, and harsh – but winter is also very beautiful!  Having a positive attitude and engaging in activities that make you happy will help you to get through these tough months!
