Stress On The Body Through Workout
Everyone knows and promotes the benefits of physical activity. There is no ambiguity around that. However many personal trainers (unless properly educated) have taken up the one size fits all approach which would automatically reflect negatively on the trainers as well as the institution they studied from or the institution that hired them.
Asking for proper medical release forms, as well as taking a proper assessment of the medical condition and NOT assuming that you (as the trainer) know everything and can solve all problems is the best approach.
A Proper Assessment
The stress that the body experiences during physical activity is more than just muscles being ripped and superficial growth, rather the stress goes as deep as the musculoskeletal system. The other two areas of stress are the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system.
Proper assessment of these three areas is very important because, for example, if one client has a cardiovascular problem such as atherosclerosis, wherein the arteries lose elasticity because of the fatty deposits, then in a high intensity workout, wherein there is a higher demand for blood and oxygen to the heart, but restricted access to it because of atherosclerosis, this simple workout can become the cause of a heart attack.
Another example is, from a respiratory point is someone who has asthma, bronchitis, or any COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which causes respiratory problems.
Possible Consequences
Exercise can, in some cases, help the problem but in many cases can worsen the symptoms. An easy test is to check the heart rate and breathing of the client when they are sick vs when they are feeling completely healthy: there will be a significant difference.
For example, when breathing is an issue then oxygen (which is essential for the body tissues for survival) becomes limed causing the symptoms to worsen even sending clients to the hospital.
Humans are all different physically and psychologically thus the stress that is put on the various systems can also affect a person positively OR negatively from a psychological point of view. Sure, exercise is good however the type of workout and creation of a workout plan conducive to the client is the best approach any trainer can take.
The last thing any trainer would want to do is to aggravate an existing condition or to initiate a new one!
