After spending the last 8 years working as a community pharmacist, I have recently had the opportunity to participate as a lead pharmacist in a clinical trial about pharmacist-led dietary interventions in type 2 diabetics with the University of British Columbia. This was an eye-opening experience for me, as I saw tremendous changes in the study participants in regards to weight, body measurements (inches lost), as well as decreases, or even discontinuations of medications that were used to treat hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Being able to see firsthand how dietary interventions had positive effects on my patient’s lives has made me realize the profound effect that diet can have, and that medications are not always the answer for helping people to achieve their health and wellness goals. As I progress through this course and become a holistic nutritionist, my goal is to combine this learning with my pharmacy background, which will enable me to discuss and implement more holistic treatment options with my patients.
