What we eat and drink, how much sleep we get and our lifestyle can greatly affect how we feel, our weight as well as what our skin looks like. Have you ever had a fast food meal or maybe binged on too much chocolate and woke up with a new pimple the next morning or were feeling bloated or puffy?
Our skin is the largest organ in the body and a key detoxifier. What we put into our body and how we treat it, therefore, affects our skin health – complexion, tone, and oil production.
Here are some things you can do to keep your skin healthy and looking good!
5 Tips to Keep Your Skin Healthy and Glowing
Eat Healthy Fats
Consume foods that are high in monounsaturated fats, such as oil olive and nuts, which have been shown to reduce the signs of ageing. As well, increase your fish intake (Canada’s Food Guide recommends two servings per week) to increase healthy omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) which can help reduce inflammation and provides healthy fats to the body.
Increase Your Water Intake
Our body is over 60% water so keeping hydrated is key to a healthy body and healthy skin. Being hydrated keeps skin supple and plump and when you drink more water you reduce drinking other beverages such as coffee or soda, which can dehydrate your body and skin. Also increasing water intake helps the body eliminate toxins and can assist in keeping skin clear.
Eat Foods High in Antioxidants
Eat more fruits and vegetables, all the colours of the rainbow, as foods that are high in antioxidants provide protection against free radicals and also provide key nutrients (vitamin A, C and E) the body needs to build and maintain healthy skin.
Ensure You are Getting Adequate Sleep
When we are sleeping the body is resting and repairing. Getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep every night helps skin stay hydrated, supports collagen production and keeps cortisol levels within normal range which can influence inflammation in the body.
Exercise Regularly
Exercise helps support skin health by increasing the blood flow and oxygen delivered to the skin, which can help maintain a healthy glow. Exercise also promotes sweating which removes waste and toxins from the body that sometimes show up in the skin. Aim for the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a week.
