When I am at the grocery store I like to shop for as many colours as possible. I know when I do this I am filling my fridge with an abundance of vitamins and other nutrients my body needs to function optimally everyday. Not only does my body function at it’s best when I eat the colours of the rainbow, but it also helps fight against colds and flus and any possible diseases.
Let’s go through the colours of the rainbow and find out what vitamins you can be ingesting for your body to be working at it’s best…
Purple and Blue
Plums, they’re such a tasty treat, and they’re also full of vitamins like B17, laetrile, and vitamin P, bioflavonoids. Blackberries and black currants also contain a kick of bioflavonoids. Another berry that is super yummy that I like to keep in my fridge is blueberries! Blueberries contain vitamin K and vitamin C.
Green
What can I say? Green vegetables contain so much! Spinach alone contains all of the following… Beta-carotene, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, folic acid, and so much more! Can i say WOW!? Needless to say, we really should try to be eating this magical food everyday! Another one of my favourite green foods are avocados. Yum, avocados! Full of healthy fats but also contains many B vitamins!
Yellow
Who doesn’t love bananas? Makes a great smoothie but delicious to eat on it’s own. Bananas contain a good source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Another yellow fruit I enjoy is a nice sweet and juicy pineapple. Pineapple packs a good punch of vitamin C, but also contains vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid.
Orange
Sweet potatoes can me made into a sweet dessert of be made into a tasty side dish for dinner. Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene and pantothenic acid. Another orange vegetable, carrots, you can eat them cooked, or you can eat them raw. Carrots contain biotin and orotic acid, vitamin K and vitamin C. Now, we can’t forget that special fruit that everyone turns to when they feel a cold coming along… it’s name after the colour! ORANGES!!! This fruit is packed full of vitamin C but also contains bioflavonoids.
Red
Sweet and juicy red cherries. What can I say… I really enjoy grabbing a hand full of cherries as a sweet snack. This fruit contains laetrile and bioflavonoids. An additional fruit that I can’t resist is biting into a sweet, juicy, and crunchy red apple. Some of my favourites are red delicious and royal gala. These fruits contain laetrile and vitamin C. We can’t forget delicious strawberries! What a tasty summer treat! Strawberries contain vitamin C, vitamin B6 and biotin.
Other important foods:
It should be kept in mind that our bodies do require other foods to function, such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc. But these foods do pack a punch of great vitamins for our bodies to function at it’s best. So, let me ask, what’s in your refrigerator?
