Five Facts About Carbohydrates
I had a struggle with the complexity of carbohydrates through the nutritional science and applications course so I decided to do a little more research into the basics of carbohydrates.
Five Facts
- Our bodies change 100% of the carbohydrates we eat into sugar.
- Glucose is our main source of energy.
- Some of the sources are carbohydrates that we eat are breads, rice, pasta, potatoes, vegetable, yogurt, milk, cheese and sugar.
- The amount of carbohydrates needed will vary for every person. Things like individual diet, age, weight, genetics, and overall health play a factor in how many carbohydrates you should consume. The AMDR is 45-65% of energy with no more than 25% coming from added refined sugars.
- Reading food labels and meal planning are such an important part of maintaining optimum health. Remember that the serving size may have to be altered to fit your meal plan. That is actually just a recommendation from the manufacturer. Look at the grams of carbohydrates and sugar to see if you need to adjust your serving to fit your needs.
