Yoga can be an extremely healthy activity to fit into your daily routine for so many reasons. Today, I’ll be giving you 5 reasons (although there are many more) that I would like to share with you. Many people think that yoga is just doing “poses” and that’s pretty much it, but there are so many benefits to yoga that people don’t realize. As someone who has struggled with weight management, stress, and insomnia in the past I can definitely say yoga has helped relieve these symptoms for me in a very positive way, so much to the point where I even went and got my yoga teaching certificate to teach yoga to help and inspire others!
With that being said, I’d like to share with you 5 reasons how yoga can benefit you in your everyday life and health to maybe inspire you to go take a class and try it out!
5 Reasons To Start Practicing Yoga Today
Helps With Stress Relief
The breath work that’s focused in yoga and meditation is very important in reducing stress. Often when we become stressed our breath becomes short and shallow wherein yoga we tend to breathe in deep which sends more oxygen to our brain, lungs, and heart. This will help activate your body’s relaxation response which helps reduce your cortisol levels (our primary stress hormone).
Helps You Sleep Better
As stated above, yoga can help with reducing stress and anxiety. The less stressed you are, the better of a nights sleep you are more likely to have. If you are going to do yoga at night near your bedtime, make sure your not choosing a class that’s going to get your heart really pumping that will keep you awake all night, choose a slower paced yoga class such as Hatha, Yin, Restorative, or Yoga Nidra which are all much slower classes that can help relax you for a better nights sleep.
Weight Management
Practicing yoga gets you moving, which helps burn calories (especially if you’re taking a power flow class). Also, the spiritual and emotional part of practicing yoga may help encourage you to make better food choices and become a more conscious eater since yoga can get you to become more in “tune” with your body.
Detoxifies The Body
When you constantly stretch and contract your muscles while doing yoga, your organs are moving around which will help the process of draining the lymphs in your body. This is beneficial since it will help eliminate and dispose of built up toxins in the body.
Helps Your Flexibility
The asana’s and flow of movement in yoga helps release tensions from our mind and body thus helping to make us more flexible. In today’s society, we don’t tend to use the “full range” of our muscles and joints so our bodies become limited. In yoga, we use the full range of our joints and muscles to help improve our flexibility.
