Funky Monkey Smoothie
Sometimes I feel like my kids must be the pickiest eaters on the planet. I have to find ways to sneak the proper nutrition into their diets. A great way to do this is through smoothies. They are also a fast breakfast option or after school snack. The kids feel like they are getting a chocolatey treat and I feel like I’ve won the daily food battle…for now. As with any smoothie, you can supplement with various add-ins such as, flax oil, inulin powder, vitamin D etc… The cocoa powder masks any additional flavours that you might want to sneak in!
Ingredients
- 2 cups Non-dairy milk, I prefer coconut milk
- 1 tbsp Pure 100% organic cocoa powder
- 3 pitted dates
- 1 cup Chopped banana, preferably frozen (if not, add ice cubes)
Method
- Add all the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.
- *Can also be made into popsicles if you have extra!
Besides the fact that this smoothie is delicious and kid friendly, there are many nutritional benefits:
- Pure cocoa powder is high in magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc, all minerals that help support immune function, bones and heart health. It also contains flavonoids which help with inflammation.
- Dates are a wonderful way to add sweetness while providing a great source of vitamins and minerals, such as, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc. They also contain B vitamins, folate, vitamin A and K. Dates are high in fibre and contain natural sugars which will help keep you full longer and keep your energy going.
This smoothie is a delicious, nutritious breakfast or snack option perfect for that hard to please child…or adult! Hope you all enjoy as much as my family does!
