Marvellous Oregano Oil

It is a pure coincidence that I came across a little bottle that would change my family’s take on colds and other health issues.

I got this sample in a gift basket when I visited a health event a few years ago and didn’t think much of it at first. I had even forgotten about it, until I heard a podcast on oregano oil’s marvelous benefits! To name a few, it’s been shown to be antimicrobial, antiviral, antifongal, antirheumatic, antipyretic, antiseptic, anti inflammatory, antispasmodic, antioxidant…

When I came down with cold symptoms, I thought I had nothing to lose and gave the oil a try. A few rounds of drops later, I was not only symptom free, but the cold never actually showed up! Doubtful at first, I got my husband to try it also. He is the kind of non believer in that kind of « natural witchcraft thingy », so if it worked on him, I believed that it was because it was not just in my head. Little did we know, he also felt better! We’ve been hooked ever since!

After digging a little more, I found that it was not only for colds, but also for infections, gastric problems, intestinal gases, wound healing, ear aches, you name it, it probably helps!

Being in the Lamiaceae family, also known as the « mint family », oregano has been used for centuries, and many studies showed that oregano oil is the more powerful and effective against bacteria and pathogenic viruses. Oregano vulgare is the best known kind of oregano. It is rich in phytochemicals, great for fighting infections, even more than strong antibiotics like Streptomycin and penicillin.

Hippocrates (c.460-c.377 BC) even prescribed oregano to treat affections like respiratory problems, gastro-intestinal discomforts, various wounds, and much more. It was later used to help treat coughs, skin problems, stomach aches, sprains, spasms, jaundice, edema, etc.

The most active compound in oregano is carvacrol, contributing to its anti-infective super powers. Carvacrol has been shown to eliminate pathogens and heal diseases as it is a strong antimicrobial agent.

Before I give you a few uses of this little bottled miracle, I just want to make sure you make the distinction between two products: when buying oregano to treat or prevent ailments, make sure to use oil of oregano, which is the diluted version of the oregano’s essential oil. If in doubt, ask a professional at your local health food store. Never use undiluted oregano oil since it is an irritant, both topically and internally.

So here are some great uses for the Oil of oregano. The brand I use is « Joy of the mountain », which has a dilution of 1:3 (25% oregano oil and 75% olive oil) and containing 75-85% carvacrol.
