Nutrition Coaches Needed!

You Can Make A Difference!

If you are interested in taking any of the NutraPhoria courses or programs, here is why you should!

My husband Glen just had open heart surgery last week and thankfully all is well. He is now safely at home working on his recovery.

He was in the hospital a total of 4 days; 2 days in ICU and 2 days on the recovery ward.  He had walked into the hospital Monday morning for surgery and walked out, on his own two feet, Friday afternoon.  And I do mean walked out, he didn’t even use a wheel chair to get to the main doors of the hospital.  Totally amazing!!

The nursing and physiotherapy staff were blown away by his progress.  They were certain that his healthy eating habits and active lifestyle leading up to his surgery were primary factors in his quick improvement.

With heart surgery, we were under the impression that we were going to meet with a dietician during his stay to discuss healthy eating.  This never happened.  Instead we were given a burgundy folder with a copy of the Canada Health Guide and a directive on low sodium consumption.  We were told to read these and let them know if we had any questions.

That’s it!

Although this was not really an issue for us as we have been practicing healthy eating habits most of our lives, (Glen’s surgery was hereditary and not heart disease related) I wondered about the other patients that were there for heart bi-pass operations and other heart disease related procedures.

How many patients actually stopped to read these handouts or understand that they needed to change their habits in order to become heart healthy?

Glen had shared his room on the ward with another patient who had the following items at his bed side: a jar of salted peanuts, a can of Alpha-getti, instant Cup of Noodles and a number of Soda Pop containers.  This man was actually bragging to his visitors about how well he ate and didn’t understand why this (surgery) had happening to him.  I wonder if he looked at the Canada Food Guide he was given?

I am so impressed and thankful for our health care system and for the advances in surgery that continually help those who need it.   But this experience has made me even more aware of the need for preventative education and support.

The NutraPhoria programs and courses should be compulsory to anyone interested in their own health and the health of those they love.

And to those who choose to make it a career to bring this information to others – you are dearly needed!
