The Queen of Spices, Lady Turmeric

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!

Turmeric, or its other alias “curcuma longa,” is an ancient spice that has gained some popularity in the Western world in the last couple years. Here’s why!

Turmeric is a powerful, health boosting, anti-inflammatory spice that is easy to find, relatively inexpensive, and versatile in use. It has a wonderful and vibrant golden color with a taste that can be masked in smoothies and soups! Here’s a fun fact; turmeric is part of the ginger family and has approximately over 133 species. There are 55 different names for the word turmeric in Sanskrit.

The Queen of Spices, Lady Turmeric

So why is it so special? For centuries, this spice has been used medicinally in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and China. It is loaded with, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc.  According to the Journal of the American Chemical Society, turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties. (Phew! That was a mouthful!)

This golden spice can also be used to revitalize skin (yes, make your own face mask with tumeric), brightens teeth, relieves acne, reduces sunburn pain and itch, lowers cholesterol, reduces artritic pain and inflammation, controls diabetes, relieves cold symptoms, and respiratory infections….and much more!

Add a few pinches to all your dishes, throw some in your tea and toss some in your smoothies.

Tip: A pinch of black pepper increases the absorption of turmeric in your body.

Here is a great recipe for Turmeric Milk that is quick and easy, and provides all the benefits this spice has to offer. Drink anytime, day or night!

TUMERIC MILK IN A PINCH!

  • 1 tsp organic extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  •  ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • A pinch of black pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp of honey
  • 1 cup of Milk (any type, I find Almond works best)
  • In a small pot, place coconut oil, turmeric, and black pepper. Keep the heat low while stirring the mixture vigorously until the fat melts completely. Add honey. Stir to incorporate well then pour mixture into a cup of warm milk and enjoy!
