Scum Bars!

May 23, 2017

Here is a healthy granola bar packed full of antioxidants, vitamins and loads of minerals, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and protein! I have been making scum bars for years, and the best part about following your own recipe is you can change and modify it to whatever your particular needs and wants are at the time. You are probably wondering why I call them Scum bars, it is because of the spirulina in them, blue-green algae, or also known as pond scum! An amazing super food in my books, just this one ingredient alone makes these bars worth trying.

Spirulina contains 60% protein, a complete protein that contains all essential amino acids, full of vitamins and minerals some more then the recommended DV and is also alkaline with a PH of 7.35.  I know it is just one ingredient, but I get so excited about food that is full of health supporting properties that comes from mother earth and makes me feel alive when I eat it. I should just do a whole blog on this one power house.

The other ingredient that makes these bars so green is the Chlorophyl. Which is the pigment in green plants that helps transfer light into energy. Another food that gets me excited, with many benefits like detoxifying the blood, stimulating the immune system, aiding in weight loss and is a natural deodorant, just to name a few.

Scum Bars

Directions

Your base for these granola/scum bars is 5-6 cups of either granola – hopefully you have made your own – or what I do is mix 5-6 cups of all the healthy and tasty ingredients in the house at the time, the base is always old fashion oats and then I start adding nuts and seeds. Also depending on my dietary needs at the time I might add a couple scoops of vanilla protein power, extra chia or flax seeds, prunes, psyllium husk, more or less of what your body needs. I always mix in about 1/4 cup of spirulina.

Then you melt 1.75 cups of coconut oil with 1 cup raw almond butter over low heat. Remove from heat and add approx, 1/4 cup chlorophyl and 2-4 TBSP honey or maple syrup.

Then simply pour the liquid on the granola, mix together and press (hard) into a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Put it in the freezer for about 20min to harden a bit before cutting into bars. I keep them either in the fridge or freezer otherwise they fall apart around room temperature. Thicker bars tend to stay together better, you may also want to mix a bit more coconut oil and almond butter if they don’t seen to want to be holding together in the cookie sheet.

This is a good time to mention to those of you who haven’t worked with spirulina or chlorophyl before that you will usually have green fingers and teeth when eating them,  So I don’t recommend taking them to work for coffee break, they are more of a at home kind of a snack. Although if you add less of the green goodness you might get away with it, but miss all the benefits.

Ingredients

5-6 cups of granola or 5-6 cups of healthy oats, nuts and seeds.

*Examples of what I use*

  • Always start with a Lg. amount of old fashion oats
  • Unsweetened coconut
  • Chia seeds
  • Wheat germ
  • Psyllium husk
  • Goji berries
  • Prunes, rasins or cranberries
  • Pumpkin, flax, sunflower and or sesame seeds
  • Almonds, walnuts, pecans, Brazil nuts,
  • Hemp hearts
  • 1 or 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder
  • Pumpkin spice
  • 1/4 cup spirulina

………………………………………….

  • 1.75 cups of coconut oil
  • 1 cup raw almond butter
  • 2-4 TBSP honey or maple syrup, sometimes I add liquid vanilla stevia and half the honey
  • 1/4 cup chlorophyl

Once you have made these bars and modified them to your liking feel free to rename them to something like, The Hulk, which I thought was a good name considering the strong amounts of health supporting ingredients, plus they are green. They are loaded with nutrition but we also need to remember all of these ingredients are very calorie dense so be mindful on how big you cut your pieces, think the size of your palm. I like to eat them after I workout or after a long hike, when my body is low on fuel.

I hope you enjoy these delicious and healthy scum bars as much as I do,

Danielle 🙂
