SIX Ways To Eat Healthy While Working In A Restaurant

June 14, 2018

Welcome to the SERVER LIFE:

My life has consisted mostly of working in restaurants. Whether hosting at 14, serving by 16, and bartending by 18. Now at 26, I have bounced around cities and provinces and lots of restaurants in the process. I have gone to school to work in accounting, but I just can’t seem to get away from the hospitality industry.

IF YOU CAN RELATE: We ALL know how difficult it is to eat healthy when there are “mess ups” sitting in expo, or extra fries under the heater. We are ALL guilty of snacking when there is hot pizza sitting there available to quickly munch on between tables.

SOOOO, I have made a list of the MY 6 main ways that I have resisted to eat the unhealthy, very accessible food!

SIX Ways To Eat Healthy While Working In A Restaurant

WATER!

I am always drinking water at work. I bring a shaker cup with me or water bottle and fill it constantly to avoid the FREE POP that is also everywhere! I found that with having my own container that i drank water way more then just using the glassware provided.

WALK AWAY!

I know… duh. BUT SERIOUSLY! I work in the lounge and our expo and kitchen is located in the dining area, so when I walk over there and sitting there is a bowl of fries, or a full pizza, pasta or burger that can’t go to a table and my fellow servers are moaning over how good it tastes, I LEAVE. I go back to the lounge and wait till its gone. Then when i go back BAM – can’t eat what is not there, right?

THROW IT OUT!

When there is only a few of us working and there is food in the pass through, one of us will just throw it out so you can just avoid the whole fact of eating those half-hour old fries calling your name.

ORDERING!

When it comes to eating at work that’s the hard part. So many items yet so many calories with each! (Taking in the fact that i work at Boston Pizza.) I try to stick to three categories: Salads (yes, boring, BUT with the right choices can easily work with your meal plans), kids meals (even on cheat days it allows you to have regulated small portions),  and side orders (allowing me to order chicken and veggies seperately to make my own meals). With these in mind, every restaurant is different, but most have a book or laminated sheets hanging somewhere with ALL nutritional facts and i suggest taking time to look through them, YOU WILL BE SHOCKED!

BRING YOUR OWN FOOD!

This has been a huge benefit for me! Not only do you eat better, because tou have your own homemade meals with you, it is also CHEAPER. I spend so much on groceries, then go and eat at work and spend even more… why though?!

REPETITION!

The more you DON’T eat the extra fries, or order that “last” bad meal of the week, the easier it will be. After a week or two, you wont even think twice about eating the “waste” food, or pouring out your third pop from the machine.

If this helps you in any way, let me know! Also, give me your tips for what you do!
