High in vitamins and minerals, most super foods also protect us from harmful free-radicals and disease with their antioxidant properties.
I jumped on the super food bandwagon earlier this year after getting sick and tired of being sick and tired. I have what I personally dub “the worst immune system of all time ever” and catch every virus, cold, flu going around town. After a lifetime of this in my 35 years, it had to stop.
I incorporated a few gems into my diet this past year which resulted in my healthiest winter EVER in 2016. I got mildly ill or felt rundown a few times BUT a complete 180 from the typical Bronchitis, Strep throat, Sinus infections and various other viruses that had always plagued me.
Kale
Known to have the largest amount of antioxidants of any other fruit and vegetable, it’s also packed with vitamins K, A, and C – plus carotenoids, flavonoids, and isothiocyanates, which have been found to decrease cancer risk. I like to add to my morning smoothies or pop in the oven with olive oil and salt for a crispy treat!
Garlic
Full of antimicrobial, antiviral and antibiotic properties as well as vitamins C, B6, and Manganese – Garlic is effective at treating yeast infections and preventing enlarged prostate. Feel a cold coming on?? Crush a clove of garlic to release all the good juices and suck it back raw. Take that cold!
Wheatgrass
You want me to eat what…?!? Despite it’s name, Wheatgrass is actually gluten free! Containing 17 Amino Acids as well as vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, l and K, it is a powerful detoxifier. Wheatgrass contains beneficial enzymes that help protect us from carcinogens and lessens the effects of radiation and toxins in the body. It cleanses the body from head to toe of any heavy metals, pollutants and other toxins that may be stored in the body’s tissues and organs. Juicing is the best way to garner the benefits. Don’t have a juicer? Throw a handful in your smoothies.
Coconut Oil
Saving the best for last – the one and only Coconut Oil! Grab a tub of Extra Virgin Coconut oil for a multitude of daily uses – body moisturizer, hair conditioner, mouth wash and for all of your cooking needs. Lauric Acid, the main component in Coconut Oil, has natural anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. I am convinced that adding a daily spoonful to my smoothies and using in my cooking has been the biggest contributor to my improved health. Its also the only thing I use as a moisturizer for my face!
Try incorporating some of the above Super Foods into your diet as we approach cold and flu season and become a believer!
