Fancy a thirst quenching mega drink that packs some pretty big health punches? I have just the thing! This my friends is called “Switchel,” a popular drink from days gone by…like more than a century gone by. Switchel was the beverage of choice for farmers working long, hot days in the fields at hay harvest time (haymakers punch is another term used for Switchel). Literally made with just 5 ingredients most people readily have at home: water, apple cider vinegar, a sweetener, lemon and ginger. Surprisingly refreshing and will nip that thirst in the bud quickly, not to mention the many benefits it has. Let’s break it down a bit.
Apple Cider Vinegar can lower blood sugar, boost energy, and possibly help with weight loss, just to name a few. Ginger has potent anti-inflammatory compounds, can help with gastrointestinal problems and facilitates digestion. Lemon has a ton of vitamin C, is a natural anti-oxidant and is alkalizing for the body.
Switchel is a natural, healthy way to replenish your electrolytes and is often considered to be the original sports drink. Make a batch and try it after a sweaty workout sesh or when enjoying a sun filled day outside.
How to make Switchel:
Ingredients
- 8 cups of water
- 3/4 cup of maple syrup or raw honey (more or less to taste)
- 3 tablespoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 tablespoon of ground ginger
- a squeeze of lemon
Combine, stir and chill for a couple hours. Serve over ice and enjoy!
