Weight Loss Tips

For many years I yo-yo dieted, trying different fad diets. I lost the weight but found myself starving, unsatisfied and unable to continue with them longer term.  I always gained the weight back until I started to apply the importance of nutritional concepts.

Eating low-fat pre-packaged snacks and calorie-reduced drinks are probably one of the biggest mistakes you can make.  Most people feel they can indulge on these and they are ok.  Pre-packaged foods are usually loaded with sugar and artificial sweeteners.  Eating natural foods and whole grains is a good start.  Eliminate “poor choices” such as soft drinks, but rather choose water which is what your body really requires.  Reducing red meat consumption and eating more fish will cut calories.  Don’t make meat the largest portion of your meal… Vegetables should take up at least half of your plate.  This will crowd out higher calorie foods and have many health benefits. Use a smaller plate as opposed to a large one as we tend to “fill our plates”.

Make a menu for the week and shop only for those items needed so you don’t stray from your targeted calorie consumption.  Be sure to have healthy snacks on hand like fruit and nuts, not chips and chocolate.  Many old favourite recipes can be modified to make them healthier, and lower in calories.  Pack your own lunch when going to work or school, it’s cheaper and will keep you from making poor choices at a cafeteria. Think of food as fuel for your body, not a friend to comfort you when you are down.

Variety and balance are key drivers to keep you on track. Losing weight and maintaining it requires life style changes that last… It’s not something that is only to be done for 6 weeks. Do things like taking the stairs over the elevator or if you work in an office, go for a walk on your lunch. After dinner, choose  physical activity rather than sitting watching TV or playing video games. Finding interest and activities you like are the key to staying committed long term. Exercise improves mood and will help burn those calories, now lets get movin’.
