Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard mention of chia seeds. Chia seeds were actually originally grown in Mexico, and were valued for their nutritional and medical properties. It is also said that Aztec warriors ate them for endurance.
Fast forward and these little round seeds have been getting a lot of headline. And rightfully so! They are nutritious and so easy to incorporate into your diet in a myriad of ways! While you’ve probably heard that chia seeds are beneficial to our health, have you ever taken the time to find out what they are and what benefits they really have?
Why You Should Be Eating Chia Seeds
Let’s take a look at what is actually in these powerful little seeds!
One ounce of chia seeds contain about:
- 10.6 grams of fiber
- 12.3 grams carbohydrates
- 8.6 grams fat
- 5.6 grams of protein
- 1137 calories
These babies are full of Omega 3 fatty acids that the body needs for better absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E and K. Not to mention fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium, niacin, and zinc.
These super seeds are so versatile, there’s no reason not to add some into your daily diet! You can use them in so many ways. Sprinkle on salads, in smoothies, make in to chia pudding.
My personal favourite is to add them to water until the seeds are hydrated, add some lemon and sip away!
