Have you ever wondered what the large nuts you find in a trail mix are called, and what they’re good for? I used to leave those nuts behind, until I learned they’re an amazing superfood!
Brazil Nuts – A Superfood
Brazil Nuts are native to South America and are found in the Amazon rain forest. One tree can produce approximately 250lbs of nuts in one year. Side note, did you know it’s illegal in Brazil to cut down a Brazil Nut Tree?
Brazil Nuts are a superfood powerhouse mainly because they are the best source of the trace mineral, Selenium. There are many benefits of Selenium, some of which include; mood enhancer, decreases your chance of depression, prevents cancer (in particular breast cancer), builds immunity, helps maintain a healthy metabolism, helps with fertility in both males and females, and they’re an antioxidant and and anti-inflammatory agent. Selenium can also decrease toxic mercury levels in the body, and can also keep your thyroid working properly.
Not only are these nuts high in Selenium, they are a great source of B Vitamins, which help increase our metabolism and ensure good brain health.
Other important minerals in the nut include: Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium which can help maintain good blood pressure. They’re also high in unsaturated fats, which can increase HDL (the good cholesterol).
They also have a good amount of protein and fiber!
When purchasing, it is best to purchase them in small amounts as they can go rancid quickly. Like most nuts, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Roasting, or toasting these nuts will damage the oil and decrease all the benefits they have to offer. Eating them raw is best! Make sure they are hard and not rubbery when you bite into them. Crush them and add them on top of your yogurt or oatmeal or add them to your favourite trail mix.
Remember we only need a few a day, as Selenium can build up and can be dangerous if overconsumed.
Now go ahead and don’t leave these superfood nuts behind! Enjoy!
