Spotlight on Spirulina

September 1, 2017

As I transitioned to a completely plant-based diet about two months ago, spirulina has definitely become a superfood that I bring in daily.  My digestion and energy levels have been getting better, actually much better when I look back at how I was feeling two years ago when I was diagnosed with SIBO (small intenstinal bacteria overgrowth).  I was very concerned about meeting my nutrient needs as I cut out all meat, dairy and eggs, but with my focus on ample organic vegetables and fruits, sprouted grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and the addition of spirulina, I am restoring harmony and balance to my body and mind.

Spotlight on Spirulina

Spirulina is known as a superfood because of its remarkable nutrient density profile and is considered the highest protein source at 60% of digestible vegetable protein.

Check Spirulina out:

  • Mineral rich source of iodine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.
  • Contains two amazing phytonutrients–chlorophyll, which is cleansing, detoxifying and removes heavy metals, and anti-oxidative carotenoids.
  • The best known source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an anti-inflammatory essential fatty acid that is good for the heart.  Also, GLA is a precursor to prostiglandins, which are hormones that are involved in many functions.
  • Anti-stress and co-enzyme functions of the B vitamins- B1, 2, 6 and 12.
  • Incredibly high in calcium.
  • …and it is known for its highly absorbable form of Iron.

Spirulina improves digestion by suppressing the growth of bad bacteria while supporting beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria.  It strengthens the immune system, supports cardiovascular health, lowers cholesterol and stimulates detoxification.

Need I say more about this amazing, alkalizing gift from nature!

The sourcing of Spirulina is very important, making sure you always choose organic and the best areas to buy quality Spirulina from is Hawaii and India.

So fire up your blender and try this delicious and detoxifying smoothie…
