My 3 Favourite Superfoods: Goji Berries
This post is the second in a series of 3 highlighting my top 3 favourite superfoods. My first post highlighted all of the wonderful benefits of raw cacao. You can find that post here and read all about it!
My second favourite superfood is another small but mighty food.
Goji Berries
Goji Berries also called wolfberries are small vibrant orangey-red berries native to China. These berries have been used in Traditional Chinese medicine for almost 2,000 years.
Some of the traditional uses include:
- Liver protection
- Circulation improvement
- Promoting longevity
- Supporting and improving eyesight
- Boosting fertility
- Boosting immune function
- Relieving fatigue
- Reducing fever
- Relieving hypertension
- Malaria
- Prevention of cancer
Goji Berries like many other berries are nutrient rich and are reported to be the most nutrient dense fruit in the world. They are low in calories and fat and packed with fiber. Goji Berries contain 18 amino acids-including all of the essential amino acids, 21 trace minerals, 500 times the vitamin C of an orange, 15 times the amount of iron as spinach, more beta-carotene than carrots and the highest concentration of protein of any fruit.
Some other impressive benefits include:
- A high level of antioxidants and nutrients that support the immune system and reduce inflammation because they fight free radical damage.
- In addition to high levels of antioxidants, Goji Berries contain high amounts of Vitamin C and A. These 2 nutrients are essential in boosting immunity warding off illness such as the common cold and protecting against more serious chronic conditions like cancer.
- Goji berries are loaded with Beta-Carotene and Vitamin E. These nutrients promote healthy, radiant skin and are effective in skin cancer treatment.
- Eye health protection. The high content of carotenoids Beta- Carotene and Zeaxanthin provide natural treatment and prevention of macular degeneration and vision loss. These Carotenoids, especially Zeaxanthin, protect the retina from UV light exposure and free radicals.
- Help stabilize blood sugar. Goji Berries help control the release of sugar into the bloodstream, which prevents spikes and dips due to problems balancing glucose levels.
- A polysaccharide in goji berries appears to stimulate the secretion of Human
- Growth Hormone (HGH) by the pituitary gland. Human Growth Hormone plays a major role in increasing muscle mass, keeping skin young and firm, and aids in weight loss.
- Goji berries contain beta-sitosterol and kukoamine – two phytochemicals with cholesterol-lowering properties.
- Consuming Goji Berries or drinking Goji Berry juice regularly can contribute to an increase in energy levels, improved mood and digestion according to a study from The Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine.
It is most common to find Goji Berries dried. They have a soft, chewy and sticky texture and some people find them bittersweet. I love to add them to granola, salads, smoothies and oatmeal. They can also be made into a tea and soaked in water to soften them if needed.
