Bone Strength
Did you know…
…That 70% of our bones are made up of minerals and they are continuously exchanging these minerals throughout our body.
…And you are damaging your bones if you drink plenty of soft drinks that are high in phosphates. The calcium and phosphorus balance is disrupted by the excess phosphates.
…Plus the choices you make in your diet and lifestyle depend on the health of your bones.
Vitamins and Minerals to keep your bones strong
For the best outcome for your bones a combination of vitamin D, calcium and magnesium is optimal.
Vitamin D
Better known as the “sunshine vitamin”
- Helps aid with the absorption of calcium.
- Found in foods like fish liver oil, egg yolks and butter, also found in smaller amounts in mushrooms and dark leafy greens.
Calcium
the mineral that is most abundant in our body.
- Too much salt can decrease absorption along with age. An adult will only absorb 30-50% unlike infants and children that have an absorption of 50-70%.
- Calcium source are found in many foods but have only high amounts in some foods such as milk, broccoli, molasses, turnip greens and almonds.
Magnesium
Bones and teeth contain 65% of magnesium but only 40-50% is absorbed.
- During processing and refining much of the magnesium is lost.
- Magnesium is leached into water during boiling or soaking creating a “pot liquor” of nutrients.
- Sources of magnesium are found most nuts and seeds, vegetable and dark leafy greens, brown rice, avocado and dried apricot.
A healthy approach to a variety of wholesome foods and lively lifestyle helps create an optimum balance for a healthy body.
