Let’s warm up!!
January 5, 2017
Here in my town in Ontario we have had our first real snow fall of the season. The kids (big and small) are having so much fun playing in the snow. They are even having a snow day off of school!!
The snow often comes with a request for hot chocolate, but I don’t like serving them the powdered versions from the store. So I decided to start making it from scratch and we love it!!
I have created a basic recipe that can be easily tweaked to really make it a special treat that anyone can love.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup chocolate almond milk
- 1tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1tsp coconut oil
- 1 cinnamon stick
Directions
- First, I put the water and cinnamon stick in a small pot on the stove. I like to bring the water just to a soft boil.
- I then reduce the heat and add the almond milk, maple syrup and coconut oil. Do not let the milk and water mixture boil. I find it changes the flavour.
- Remove from the heat source, discard the cinnamon stick and whisk in the cacao powder.
Done!! Simple as that.
Ways to switch it up
You can make adjustments to the sweetness of the drink by either adding or reducing the maple syrup. Other variations of this drink could be made by leaving the cinnamon out and adding a drop of peppermint oil. Or for a Mexican hot chocolate you could add a pinch of cayenne pepper with the cacao powder and whisk it together.
