The Importance of Water in your diet…
Growing up, we didn’t drink a lot of water. It was mostly juice and milk. Juice wasn’t even really considered a treat. We always had a fresh made jug of Tang ready to drink in the fridge. I honestly don’t remember drinking water at all!
Once I started participating in sports in Junior high school is when I really started drinking water, as it was the only thing that seemed to quench my thirst. I also felt much better drinking water. The more water I ingested, the more I wanted to ingest.
Health Benefits of Drinking Water
Drinking water has so many great health benefits, including:
- It helps carry nutrients and oxygen to your cells therefore helping fight fatigue, joint pain and headaches.
- Water helps to remove toxins from the body.
- Water helps regulate your body temperature.
- Can improve your skin complexion.
- It has wound healing properties. Wounds heal better in a moist environment because water accelerates the making of new skin.
- Helps prevent issues such as dry skin and constipation.
- It can help you feel full longer! This is my favourite part of drinking water. Often, thirst can be mistaken for hunger.
The amount of water we require is based on several factors, including activity level, height & weight, the climate and whether we are losing water through perspiration and of course, our diet. The average person requires about 1.5-2 litres of water daily in addition to a healthy diet containing fruits and vegetables. You can try keeping track of your intake to see if you are getting the required amount or go by your body’s signals and replace juice or pop with water in your diet.
