I am the first one to admit that I ate a diet that mostly consisted of carbohydrates and “junk food”.
Whatever was easy for me to grab quickly went in my mouth. I also was guilty of finishing whatever my kids left on their plate as I didn’t want it to go in the garbage. In the past year, I have paid a lot more attention to my poor eating habits and have corrected 90% of them. I would like to offer some tips that worked for me.
Be conscious of the bad eating habits that you want to fix. This is very important that you keep these top of mind
Tips to Clean up your Diet
Plan your meals for the week. I cannot stress this enough. Having a plan makes things much easier. I grocery shop on the weekend after making my meal plan and Sunday night is prep day. Whether it’s cutting vegetables and fruit or seasoning or thawing meats. This prevents me from making last minute, unhealthy decisions.
Drink more water! If you already think you are drinking enough water, drink more! If you are drinking sugary drinks, start by replacing one of those with water a day and slowly increase. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.
Eat whole organic foods when possible. Think of your favourite foods and modify them with organic or grass fed foods.
Cut down on sugar! This was a big thing for me. Be aware that sugar is in a lot of foods to add flavour. Start by limiting sweets such as pop, candy and baked goods. When reading labels you can look for sugar to be one of the last ingredients as ingredients are listed in order of amounts.
Before making these changes, you need to tap into what motivates you. Moving at your own pace with some guidance from a Nutrition coach will work best.
