Inflammation. We all have it and it is a natural and even life saving bodily response. When we are injured, in pain, sick or stressed; inflammation is the body’s natural and healthy response. The problem arises when inflammation becomes chronic. When levels of inflammation are high, persistent and serve no purpose it can damage the body. Chronic inflammation is thought to be the underlying cause of premature aging, aches and pains, and diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, MS and Alzheimer’s.
Certain illnesses, genetic predisposition, lack of exercise, excess weight, stress, lack of sleep, overeating and exposure to toxins can all contribute to high levels of inflammation. A diet high in fried foods, sugar, trans fats, dairy products, commercially raised meats, processed meat, alcohol, refined grains, artificial food additives, and foods you are sensitive or allergic to can contribute to chronic inflammation as well.
A little thing called C-reactive protein increases in your blood as levels of inflammation increase in your body. Measuring levels of CRP is the most effective test for measuring inflammation in the body. Studies suggest that even a slight increase in CRP can increase risk for things like stroke, heart attack and diabetes.
Is there anything we can do to avoid chronic inflammation and support our bodies? The answer is yes. There are many foods and supplements that help combat inflammation. Let’s take a look and some of the top ones.
