Turmeric is a well liked and versatile spice. It is best known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is actually a member of the ginger family and can be paired with that spice as well in recipes if you don’t mind the strong flavours. Turmeric works by interfering with the messaging molecules that cause inflammation. It is helpful in the overall balance of the immune system messaging molecules. It has also been thought to be an antioxidant, help in fighting diabetes and cancer, be brain boosting, aid in having healthy skin, in cleansing the blood, also improving liver functions, and aiding in metabolism and weight management.
Turmeric has a beautiful colour which makes it very visually appealing in many different recipes. If you are not a fan of its unique flavour it is available in pill form. It can be used in many ways such as in stir-fry, while meat is sautéeing, in soups and stews, in egg dishes, in drinks, and in dips, sauces and salad dressings. One of my favourite uses for it is on shredded tofu sautéed with coconut oil, green peppers and spinach, with a few dashes of soy sauce. Yum!!
Here is a recipe for a creamy turmeric tea that is sure to start your day off on the right foot!
Totally Turmeric
Ingredients
- 1 cup almond or coconut milk
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- Dash of cayenne
- 1/2 tsp honey (use maple syrup for a vegan recipe)
- 1/8tsp cinnamon
Directions
- Slowly heat the milk and honey on the stove while whisking in the dry ingredients
- Be careful not to let the milk boil, I find it changes the flavour
Enjoy!
