August 8, 2017

I’m sure everyone has seen these lovely little kombucha bottles lining the fridges at their local health food store! This tasty drink is all the rage in the health scene these days. We love this stuff and here’s why!

Why Drink Kombucha?

What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a drink made by using a kombucha culture, commonly known as a scoby (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts) to ferment tea and sugar. This lively probiotic drink may not taste as you think, kombucha has a bit of a tangy taste similar to apple cider vinegar!

What are the Benefits?

Good for your gut!

Kombucha is rich in antioxidants and probiotics which promote gut health and counteract free radicals within your digestive system! The probiotic properties offered in this powerful drink will help aid in the battle of candida overgrowth, restoring balance to your digestive system!

Boost your Immune System!

Kombucha contains usnic acid, a natural antibiotic effective against many viruses

Be more Energized!

Kombucha contains small amounts of caffeine, iron and b-vitamins, released from the black tea before the fermentation process, which will help energize and invigorate your body!

Detox your Body!

Kombucha is excellent for detoxifying as it contains the organic compound, malic acid, which has shown to have excellent properties in cleansing your liver! Malic acid promotes liver health by binding to toxic metals in your body and inactivating them, helping reduce the chance of toxicity in your body! It also assists in breaking down cholesterol stones making them easy to pass through the liver!

You can find Kombucha at your local health food shop for $3-$5 a bottle or you can brew it yourself!

How to Brew Kombucha

Kombucha is simple to make, all you need is a little bit of patience and the following:

Ingredients

  • 1 glass jar, about 4L.
  • a coffee filter
  • 4L of water
  • Kombucha culture
  • 1 cup of organic sugar
  • 3 black or green tea bags
  • 1 cup of starter fluid – pre made Kombucha

Directions

  • Bring 4L of water to a boil. Once boiled remove from heat, add sugar and tea bags
  • Leave for 15 minutes and remove tea bags
  • Leave mixture overnight and allow to cool to room temperature
  • Once the mixture has cooled down pour it into your glass jar and drop in your scoby and starter fluid
  • Cover your glass jar with a coffee filter or cheese cloth
  • Allow your Kombucha to sit and ferment for 7-10 days. The longer your Kombucha ferments for the more ‘sour’ your Kombucha will taste
  • Pour your Kombucha into sealed bottles and let sit for 3 days in a warm room to carbonate
  • Put Kombucha drink in your fridge allow to cool and enjoy 🙂

*to flavor your kombucha add berries or ginger to your bottles during the carbonating stage. My favorite is raspberries!:)*
