Hello! I’m Joelle Filippelli and I’m the owner of Completely Nourished Holistic Health.  I’m both a Grade 5 teacher and a health coaching specializing in plant-based eating for individuals and young, busy families like my own!

 

I’m a momma of 2 adventurous and playful kiddos, Alessia and Lucca. I met my husband through a fellow teacher who happened to be his brother-in-law! Crazy how things work out. I love sun, sand and tropical fruit, so I try to get to Hawaii every few years for some much needed R&R. It’s a bit different with the kids now, but hey, it’s hard to complain when you’re in Hawaii! I enjoy working out at the gym or practicing yoga to keep my body healthy.  I consider my cooking to be one of my hobbies and love to create and share nutritious, plant-based dishes. My health philosophy is holistic and simple. I know how busy many of us are, so we need to build healthy habits that fit in with everything else we have going on! I believe that our health and wellness is built on 4 lifestyle elements: fitness, nutrition, stress management and support. We need each of these elements to be actively working together to keep us feeling our best. So, how did I go from teaching to holistic health? Well, I was diagnosed with Lupus about 10 years ago. I was devastated and confused. At the time, I didn’t know what Lupus was, and the uncertainty was very frightening. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs instead of attacking foreign substances. Basically, my immune system can’t tell the difference between healthy tissues and invaders, so it goes hog wild and attacks everything. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, such as painful and swollen joints, rashes and fatigue. At that time, I realized that my lifestyle of eating out and staying up late wasn’t helping me get any healthier.  So, I made the decision to go on a diet. Ugh! I’m not a fan of that word.  I counted calories, ate pre-packaged, low-calorie foods and joined weight loss programs where I tediously counted points and measured out portions. It wasn’t fun at all, and that’s not what a healthy lifestyle should feel like. I continued with this diet for several years, however. I saw results, but they were only on the outside. I certainly wasn’t fulfilled by this diet on the inside, and that’s the most important thing.

 

In March 2018, I truly experienced freedom from food for the first time. My husband and I made a huge change and decided that our family was going to start trying a plant-based diet. We removed meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, fish and poultry from our diets and replaced those items with legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and tons of fresh veggies.  Oh my goodness! I can’t describe what a huge impact this had on our lives. I was getting ready to celebrate my 40th birthday in April 2018, and I knew that I wanted to feel amazing. I also wanted to lose the weight I’d gained from my second child, feel full of energy and be living my best life.  Switching to plant-based eating gave me all this and more. I felt confident and passionate about my own health, and this sparked a fire in me that radiated from the inside out. I can honestly say that I’ve never felt as good as I do now. To top it all off, my weight is back to my pre-pregnancy weight, my cheeks are rosy, my hair is shiny, I’m kicking butt with my never ending to-do-list and even my kids are loving eating plant-based foods the vast majority of the time!
