Hi, I’m Joelle Filippelli and I am the owner of Completely Nourished Holistic Health. I also teach grade five, and I’m a moma of two adventurous and playful kiddos, Alessia and Lucca. I have a love for sun and sand and tropical fruit, so I try to get to Hawaii every few years for some much needed R&R, which is a bit different with kids now, but hey, we’re in Hawaii so I’m not complaining! To keep my body healthy, I enjoy working out at the gym or practicing yoga. I consider cooking to be a relaxing hobby and I love to create nutritious plant-based dishes.
So how did I go from teaching to holistic health? Well about ten years ago I was diagnosed with Lupus. I was devastated and confused. What was Lupus anyway? Simply put, Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs instead of only attacking foreign substances. Basically, my immune system cannot tell the difference between healthy tissues and invaders so it goes hog wild and attacks everything. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, such as painful and swollen joints, rashes and fatigue to list a few. It was at this time I realized my current lifestyle of eating out and late nights was not helping me get any healthier. So, I made the decision to go on a diet.
Ugh! Not a word I’m a fan of. But anyway, I counted calories, ate pre-packaged low-calorie foods, cans of soup, a lot of freezer meals (You know the ones!) and joined weight-loss programs, where I tediously counted points and measured out portions. Not fun at all. I continued with this lifestyle for several years and I did see results, on the outside that is. But it wasn’t until March 2018 when I truly experienced freedom from food. This is when me and my husband made the switch to plant-based eating. We removed, meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, fish and poultry from our diet and replaced these items with legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, and loads and loads of fresh veggies. Oh my goodness! What a huge change this made in our lives. First off, I have to tell you. I was getting ready to celebrate my 40th birthday in April 2018 and I knew I wanted to feel amazing when this day came. I wanted to be full of energy, lose the weight I had gained from my second child, and live my best life with my family. Switching to plant-based eating did all of this and more. It gave me confidence and passion for my own health. Knowing how healthy I was becoming, from the inside out sparked a fire in me, and I can honestly say I have never, ever felt as good as I do now, and to top it off! My weight is back to pre-pregnancy weight, my cheeks are rosy, my hair is shiny and I’m kicking butt with my never ending to-do-list!

I have seen the health of so many important people in my life become affected by the foods they are choosing to eat. Personally, my dad has high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which is directly related to his food choices. Fortunately, he has decided to change the way he eats, which makes me so happy and proud! He is slowly starting his health journey and beginning to eat as close to nature are possible, just as I hope to help you do too!
